Question

I just noticed in another thread that only grey and blue-eyed dolls are supposed to get silver eye. I have an old Samantha - is it possible for her to get silver eye eventually? Or are brown eyes somehow immune to it?

Also, I have a brand new Nellie, who has very pretty blue eyes! Is it possible that she may one day develop silver eye, or does AG manufacture the eyes differently these days, so that none of the new dolls get silver eye?

Thanks for all your expertise!

Silver eye happens to the older dolls. It is actually a manufacturing defect (which is why if your doll develops it a repair is on AG's tab).

I have a Kirsten with silver eye.

I used to think that silver eye happened only to the gray-eyed and blue-eyed dolls, but recently I've seen a few of the older brown-eyed dolls on eBay with what really looks like silver eye to me.

I wouldn't worry about it; I have a pre-Mattel Samantha and I just check her eyes every so often, but I don't worry about it too much. I do check Kirsten every so often and make sure hers hasn't gotten any worse.

That was me who said that I'm pretty sure it's been said here that all eye colors CAN get Silver Eye. I'm not sure if anyone here has or has seen a green eyed doll with silver eye, but I remember asking this same question, and someone said their Addy (I think) had gotten silver eye, so it CAN happen on the brown eyed dolls.

However, it's most common on the grey and blue eyed dolls, I think is what it boils down to. Most likely, it's possible that Nellie could, indeed, get Silver Eye sometime in the futre. I think I've only seen pictures of Silver Eye on the lighter blue, as in Kirsten's eye color, but I don't see why it wouldn't be possible on the deeper blue of Nellie's.

Hopefully someone with a bit more first hand knowledge can better answer your questions

My oldest daughter's brown eyed bitty baby developed silver eye. It is the doll which I asked that her head not be replaced, and they honored my request. They also replaced her entire body (free of charge!) I assume because she had a small rip in a seam between her legs. It had been there for years, and never got worse or bothered my daughter, so I never thought to mention it on the admission form for the doll hospital. Bitty kept the same head, but got a new body!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Oh hi! My fellow Arizonan!

Aw nuts. You had me all excited when I thought it couldn't happen to the brown-eyed dolls, and I was keeping my fingers crossed that AG had found a way to fix it with the newer dolls. I don't want to have to be uber-careful with Samantha, but then I don't want her to sit on the shelf and collect dust either, just trying to avoid the day she gets that tinge of silver. Besides, she's already got frizzy ends and a teensy bald spot, so what's a little silver eye? She's held up pretty good so far over the years and years of play. But then again, I'm not sure what I'd want to do if she got silver eye. I love her soft dark brown lashes. I'd read from other collectors here that the eyelashes were different with the newer dolls, but I was still surprised when I got Nellie to see how stiff and dark hers are. And there's a little crimp at the end of Nellie's lashes to make the otherwise stick-straight hairs look curled. I thought that was kinda funny. But that's Nellie, and not what I'm used to for Sam. I don't know if I'd want to send her in for eye transplants or not. I guess that's a bridge I can only cross if and when I get to it.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That's odd, and a little scary, that they'd just replace your doll's body without asking your permission! But thank you for confirming the prognosis!

ksami, that's why I just can't send Kirsten off. It's not horrible, it's not that noticeable since I touched up her face, and it's...well, it's KIRSTEN. It's part of her personality and it's making her who I know her to be.

If her eye goes completely white, I might consider it - or if it starts to look "painful", and I think you know what I mean. But for now, she's mine, she's got different eyes, and I love her for it.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yup that was me. I got her from eBay so I am not sure the conditions Addy had been kept in, but she certainly had silver eye. "Bubbles" are more common in Addys than silver though. They are places where the layers of the eye come loose and there is a air pocket inside the eye. (this is covered under warrenty the same as silver eye)

There was a Josefina with a bad case of silver eye on eBay a few days ago.

I think it's fair to say it is more common in the light eyed PM dolls but can happen in any color.

Do you call it "silver eye" when you send in your doll?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Oh that Josefina is gorgeous other than her eye! I didn't know it was really that common on the brown eyes. Guess I have to start watching Samantha and Josefina a bit more closely for this.

Does it only happen in PM dolls?
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I don't think it's as much PM as older dolls. I'm guessing in a few years, it'll start happening more normally to the Mattel dolls. I really do think that's at least part of why they got rid of all the grey eyed AGT dolls, though.

Do you call it "silver eye" when you send in your doll?
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I've been wondering this, too! I have to wonder if the time will come when they start charging for it if you don't know it's a defect, and not something you did.

Has ANYONE seen it happen in ANY doll with green eyes?
